We’re big fans of snack mixes around here. The boys -when they go to the grocery store with me- will point out various things and proclaim them to be ‘good snack mix material’. We don’t buy them because snack mixes at the store are almost invariably horrendously over priced for wee little bags or jars that wouldn’t even feed a third of us. We prefer to buy normal, reasonable sizes of the individual ingredients and put them together in our own way yielding Foodie with Family sized amounts. Usually, our combinations tend to lean toward salty and savoury because, well, I’m the cook and that’s what I like.
These guys of mine, however, prefer to nosh on a sweet and salty (heavy on the sweet, please) mixture. Since we’re doing the ‘mixing’ bit ourselves, I can customize it to be however they like, and what you see above is their current favourite: Fish Eye Sweet and Salty Snack Mix. Gross name, right? (Come on, folks. Tell them it’s gross. They absolutely live for grossing people out and this name was their own invention.) Get it? Gold fish and round things? Fish eyes? Did they reel you in with that one?
What you’re looking at is a perfectly-balanced-for-my-boys combo of Cookies and Cream Goldfish*, Pretzel Goldfish (the salt!), chocolate covered raisins, and yogurt covered raisins. Can we talk about the fill-in-the-blank covered raisins for a moment? I have TWO children who like to eat raisins out of hand. Munch munch. I have FIVE -count ’em 5 out of 5- children who like to eat chocolate or yogurt covered raisins. Explain this to me! No. Never mind. I don’t even care why. I’m just going to keep letting them eat the {sugar coated} raisins and call it a victory.
*Oh my word, people. Have you tried these yet? If you haven’t, please drop everything, go to the store, and grab a bag. On second thought, grab several bags. You’re going to want to build up a stash of these. My guys and I thought they tasted just like Oreos. How can that be bad, I ask you?
You are also looking at what may be the easiest to make AND sell bake-sale offering of all time. It takes you MAYBE five minutes to make up a huge batch, another five or ten minutes to package it (depending on how fancy-pants you get with containers, labels and decorations), and you are el-done-o. If you saw this at a Bake Sale, wouldn’t you bite hook, line and sinker? (I’m sorry. Fishing puns are just too easy!) What’s your favourite snack mix?

My husband, Steve, says to thank you and your guys for these wonderfully GROSS sounding snacks, he says it reminds him of “greasy grimy gopher guts”. I think he may be out sharing with the kids in the neighborhood.
You might let your boys know… I’ve just gotten over the flu and “fish eyes” REALLY are making my tummy rumble. Steve is calling me a Wimp.
This is a definite snack for the next fishing trip and Steve and his Rat Pack. Thanks for sharing. You guys do good work!

I’m making Puppy Chow this Friday for Band Festival. I’m going to add a batch of (very gross) Fish Eye Sweet and Salty Snack Mix, too! The band kids will eat this up!!!
Melissa @ Bless this Mess says
We are snack mix junkies too! The kids love to make them themselves… I’ll set out a few things and they’ll fill up their little bowls with what they like best. This mix looks amazing. I feel like I need a road trip so that I can justify eating a whole batch alone 🙂 I like you!
Julie says
Haha, the name is totally gross. But this looks tasty enough to make up for the icky name! 😉

Because this is just right. The perfect thing to fill my pocket when I’m snowboarding!

Now I’m picturing you snowboarding like that dude in the Olympics with XXXXXXL pants and jackets. Who needs eggs in the pocket? Kelley has snack mix! 😀

I make my own trail mix, but never thought of tossing in a school of goldfish. Brilliant!
Rebecca says
Goldfish. I’m kind of addicted to them. They’re the perfect little bites so they seem natural in snack mix, don’t they?
Heather || Heather's Dish says
Your boys are too funny, the fish eye thing is super creative! And sweet and salty? YES. And those cookies and cream goldfish? SOLD!
Rebecca says
Have you tried the cookies and cream ones yet? RIDICULOUSLY good! We can’t get enough!

Oh my… I love the idea of making my own snack mix. I always just buy a pack here or there.. must make next time! 🙂

There’s no going back once you realize you can customize it with stuff you love! No need to cherry pick around the oogy stuff!

This looks completely addictive, but I might swap chocolate-covered peanuts for the chocolate-covered raisins. I love yogurt raisins, but I can’t stand the chocolate covered ones.
And, for the sake of the kids, tell ’em that’s soooooo gross of a name, haha.
Rebecca says
I told them. They’re thrilled! And the chocolate/yogurt covered peanut is a great idea for a swap!
