Big Mac Tacos: bringing a fun take on “the golden arches” to taco time with irresistible tacos filled with seasoned beef, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed… tortilla. It’s everything you love about Big Macs in taco form and you don’t even have to leave the house to indulge. The whole family is going to love these!
It’s hard to explain just how a taco can capture the -dare I say- ephemeral qualities of a Big Mac. I mean, I feel silly just typing the words ephemeral and Big Mac in the same sentence.
…But let’s be real. If I say “Big Mac” you know exactly what it’s supposed to taste like, right? These tacos taste like that. If only we could figure out how to make McDonald’s ice cream at home!
The “two all beef patties” portion of the Big Mac program is played by a tasty taco meat that tastes just like the classic Big Mac. If you didn’t know that these were made at home, you’d think these were fast-food meals.
This recipe is beyond simple despite what may look like a beastly ingredient list. Because it’s so very easy, let’s keep this thing short and sweet so we can get to the good stuff.
Big Mac Taco
Let’s look at our ingredients and equipment lists before we get started on the recipe so you know what to gather. Don’t let the length of the ingredients list stand in the way of making this. They’re all simple ingredients that you’re likely to have in your kitchen already.
Ingredients
- Flour or corn tortillas
- Lean Ground Beef
- Pickle Juice
- Cornstarch
- Ketchup
- Yellow mustard
- Granulated Garlic or Garlic Powder
- Granulated Onion or Onion Powder
- American Cheese
- Shredded Iceberg Lettuce
- Dill Pickles or dill pickle relish
- Sweet or red onion
- Burger Sauce
I have used both corn tortillas and flour tortillas for our Big Mac Taco recipe, and I can confidently say they’re both delicious. Use whichever your family prefers.
I do recommend is using the small “street taco” sized tortillas to make your tacos easier to convey from plate to mouth without dropping your toppings. If all you have is larger tortillas, though, do what you need to do!
You could make these in a regular taco shell but I think you miss a little something of the “sesame seed bun” effect doing that. If you’re keen on the crunch, though, go for it.
You can make the beef mixture up to two days ahead of time. That allows you to heat the meat back up and have delicious Big Mac tacos whenever the urge strikes.
Instead of standard taco seasoning, we use the condiments you’d normally find on McDonald’s burgers to get that elusive Big Mac taste.
Let’s chat cheese! Slices of American cheese is the most authentic choice for a Big Mac hamburger, so it’s what I went with here. If you’d like to fawncy your Big Mac pizza up a little, you can sub in a combination of shredded cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese.
You can use sliced pickles if you like, but I prefer chopping my pickles up into smaller pieces so it’s easier to get a little bit of pickle in each bite. I find sliced pickles pull off whole when you try to bite into the pizza.
If you’d prefer to, use dill pickle relish in place of the pickles, but I do so love the bite-sized pieces of chopped pickles on my tacos.
I also use homemade Big Mac sauce (Burger sauce) or Thousand Island dressing for the “special sauce” Big Mac component. It’s basically a copycat Big Mac sauce. If you want a faster solution, you can use Chick Fil A sauce for a similar look and taste.
Equipment
- Oven
- Large skillet
- Ground Beef Chopper (or Sturdy Spoon)
- Measuring Spoons
- Measuring Cups
- Small Whisk or Fork
- Tongs
- Foil
Big Mac Tacos
Crumble the ground beef into a medium skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle the salt and pepper over it and break it up with a wooden spoon or a chopper as you brown it.
If there is a large amount of fat, you can drain fat away using a slotted spoon.
Any fat in the neighborhood of 2 tablespoons or so can remain in the pan to bring more flavour to the party. Stir in the ketchup, granulated garlic, and granulated onion.
In a small bowl or jar, stir or whisk together the pickle juice and cornstarch to make a slurry. Pour this mixture over the ground beef and stir well, over medium-high heat, until the sauce thickens and is glossy.
Using tongs, char each soft tortilla over a burner. If you do not have a gas stove, you can heat each tortilla briefly in a dry frying pan. Stack the charred or heated tortillas in a piece of foil large enough to fold over them to retain the heat.
Lay a slice of cheese in each heated tortilla and top the cheese with about ⅛ of the Big Mac beef filling. Divide the lettuce, pickles, and onions between the tacos.
Drizzle the burger sauce over the top and sprinkle with sesame seeds just before serving.
