Disclosure: I was sponsored by Horizon Organic to develop the recipe for this warming, winter-perfect Blender Made Spiced Hot Chocolate, but all photography, recipes, and opinions remain -as always- my own.
With our Christmas tree up and decorated and some snow swirling in the air, we are finally beginning hot chocolate season around our home. This will continue through sledding and snowball fight season and well into, “Won’t this winter finally end already?” season. It’s a good thing I have the supplies on hand for Blender Made Spiced Hot Chocolate through the whole year.
I always thought I wasn’t a fan of hot chocolate. It turned out that what I wasn’t a fan of was the sugary powdered stuff in packets that tasted watery and weak even when made with milk. Blender made hot chocolate, on the other hand, is every bit as easy to make as the powdered stuff, but is rich, made with real chocolate, good whole milk, a splash of vanilla, and a hint of warming cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne.
If THAT doesn’t warm your toes when you come in from the cold, I don’t know what will!
Cook’s Notes
- I use my high powered Blendtec or Vitamix blenders to make Blender Made Spiced Hot Chocolate from start to finish. It really is as easy as tossing in all of the ingredients and letting it go on the soup setting until steam comes from the top of the blender!
- If you don’t have a powerful blender, you can either use a less burly blender to make your mixture smooth, then transfer to a saucepan over medium low heat until it steams, or -lacking a blender entirely- can toss all of the ingredients in a saucepan over low heat and whisk constantly until everything is melted together, then whisk a little more vigorously when the milk steams to add some volume to the beverage.
- Pssst. Let this Blender Made Spiced Hot Chocolate be the jumping off point for a whole world of fabulous and simple, homemade hot chocolates. For a more “traditional” blender hot chocolate, omit the spice, but keep everything else. For a raspberry hot chocolate, toss a handful of frozen raspberries or a spoonful of raspberry preserves at the beginning with everything else. Have fun with it! Play with it!
- Because there are really only two main ingredients -milk and chocolate pieces- you’ll be happiest if you start with excellent versions of those ingredients. I prefer to use Horizon Organic milk because when there are so few ingredients in a recipe, I like to use the best.
- Likewise, when you’re choosing your chocolate, pick one you like to eat by itself. It’s the main flavour here, so you want it to be one you love.
- Maybe the pinch of salt sounds weird, but believe me, it makes a subtle difference in the final Blender Made Spiced Hot Chocolate.
- I like to add a little softly whipped cream to the top of this blender hot chocolate. I prefer it to be whipped softly enough to sort of melt into the hot chocolate rather than sit on top of it. Feel free to top with stiffer whipped cream, but I like the soft stuff here!

I’m assuming you warm up the milk before the blender? Do you warm it up with the chocolate chunks first?
Rebecca says
Hi Laura- My blender is high powered enough that it heats the milk and chocolate together. I have not made it with another blender, so I’m not sure whether you’d need to heat the milk first. I don’t think it would HURT to heat it ahead of time. You’d just want to be sure to vent the lid so that steam doesn’t build up and go poof!
