Facebook fans: You spoke and I listened! Here is the first in our series of crunchy (read: natural or low-effort) beauty tips. It may sound crazy to recommend Conditioner Only Washing (No Shampoo) and I don’t pretend to be a beauty expert, but I know what makes me feel good. And if it makes ME feel good, maybe it’ll make some of you feel good, too! If you don’t like this series you should probably become a Facebook fan so you can shout me down when I float these hair-brained (HAIR BRAINED, GET IT?) schemes of mine.
What’s blogging without a giant confession, right? I have one. But first, I have to say, I can’t even believe I’m doing a Beauty Tips post.
I’m no Audrey Hepburn or Audrey Tatou or any other Audrey for that matter. I’m a stay-at-home mom of five boys. BOYS. I ask them to brush their hair and they run screaming from me like I’m brandishing a hot poker at them instead of a hairbrush.
I grab for a warm washcloth to fix a pudding smeared face and the screams might make you think I’m wiping them down with acid. I suggest that perhaps they might want to change the shirt they’ve been wearing for a week solid and it’s greeted with a befuddled look, shrugged shoulders and a “NothankyoumomI’mcomfy.”
In short? I’m pretty much on my own here. I don’t even have a frame of reference for what is trendy or hip or even socially acceptable any more, so honestly, I don’t know how many people are going to get squeamish over what I’m about to say.
…Which is this…
I haven’t used shampoo in two and a half years. Yes. That is my beauty tip. No shampoo. (I can hear you now, “…And you’re surprised your boys are gross?”) Obviously there’s a bit more to it or everybody would be doin’ it, right?
Here’s a little history. After I had my youngest son a little over nine years ago, I felt perpetually rumpled. I had just given birth to my fifth child in eight years.
Translation: I was lumpy and hormonal. Translation of the translation: out of shape, shedding hair like mad and had spotty skin. The hair that remained attached to my head was scarcely behaving better than the stuff that fell out in handfuls in the shower/on my pillow/standing still. It was cottony looking, dry and my scalp itched like mad. (Boy, do I sound like I was a looker or WHAT?!?)
I embarked on a path that seemed like a good idea to clear up my lumpybumpy body, skin and hair problems. I started buying expensive creams and shampoos from the salon. And that?
Well, it didn’t work and it left me with bottles and pots and jars and squeeze tubes of things that were disgustingly expensive and useless. Then I tried all-natural shampoos/conditioners/beauty products. That didn’t work at all either. And the blue aloe mud bug organic herbal tinctures and shampoos and salves and whatnot were even more expensive than the professional products.
About five and a half years ago, my bathroom closet was overflowing with what amounted to more than a car payment’s worth of things I’d never use again. As a last ditch effort, I turned to the internet and googled a string of keywords that sounded like the punchline in a fairy tale:
“Straw, Hair, Pimples, Balding, Magic Shampoo, Smooth, HELP”
Rumpelstiltskin didn’t show up, but I got a list of websites that said, “No Poo”.
“But I’m not constipated, my hair just looks like cotton balls!” thought I, until I read a little further. These blogs were all talking about giving up shampoo and solving their hair problems. “Er, okay. Whatever.”
But I was desperate enough at that point to keep reading.
Over the next couple of weeks, I tried the baking soda/vinegar solution that many no-poo-ers recommended. That worked for a while, but left my hair feeling sticky. My husband had sniffed my hair when I got out of the shower and told me I smelled like a pickle. (From him, that’s a compliment. Hubby loves pickles.) I, on the other hand, missed the pretty smells of shampoo.
I tried Wen by Chaz Dean because I saw the commercial on television and any guy who can toss his hair like the Breck girl seems like a pretty solid authority on silky hair. The problem there was that it was insanely expensive and I had long hair.
I knew it wasn’t a tenable long term solution and I was only feeling so-so about the results so it was tough to justify the cost.
I turned back to the omniscient interwebs for help and discovered yet another no-shampoo group who was less intestinally know as the co-only (short for conditioner only) crowd.
The long and short of co-only is that you only wash your hair with conditioner. Again, there’s a little more to it. You can’t just pick any old conditioner; it must be a silicone-free conditioner to keep from weighing your hair down.
There’s good news, though. ANYTHING in the Suave Naturals line is silicone free. In other words, one of the cheapest conditioners out there is perfect for the job, and it’s a good thing, too, because co-only washing consists of massaging palms-ful of conditioner in your hair and scalp and letting it stay there (preferably under a shower cap) while you complete the rest of your shower then rinsing it out.
In October of 2010, I tried it. I didn’t really have any great expectations. I figured I’d get out of the shower and find my hair lank and greasy and my scalp itchy. “This is it,” I told myself, “If this doesn’t work, I’ll just cut my hair short and go back to using shampoo.”
I was shocked to find it was the opposite. My hair felt as smooth as silk and not weighed down in the least bit. For the first time in almost a decade, my scalp didn’t itch to the point where I felt like clawing it off. And ladies?
When I tell you my hair looked good, I mean it looked goooooooooooood. As in it behaved and did what I wanted it to when I wanted it to do it with little effort and almost no product and smelled pretty to boot.
The next time I went to my hairdresser, I screwed my courage to the sticking point and confessed what I was doing. She said, “Wow! Are you kidding? Your hair looks great. I’ll have to tell some of my other clients about this.” I haven’t looked back from that point on and I’ve been conditioner only washing for four and a half years now.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: My hairdresser has gone on to recommend this to many of her clients and they have reported back with great results.
I wouldn’t yank your leg on this, folks. It truly has been the holy grail for me. When I gave up shampoo, it didn’t just clear up my hair problems, it eliminated my skin problems completely.
The pimples and acne that I had been blaming on my poor choice in beauty products and/or hormones went away almost overnight.
What I learned AFTER finding what worked for me was that shampoo was stripping the natural, protective oils from my hair and scalp and face (by virtue of its proximity to my hair- thank heavens). In order to make my skin and hair behave after doing that, I had to replace what I could with conditioner in my hair and lotions on my face.
For whatever reasons, my fish-belly pale skin was too sensitive for this routine. Eliminating the shampoo/conditioner cycle did the job for me.
Is this a solution for everyone? Maybe, maybe not. Some people have reported an adjustment period where their hair and skin acted like a petulant, oily child for a week or a month or so before becoming bouncin’ and behavin’.
I had zero funky down time with my hair when I switched to conditioner only. In the interest of full disclosure, I have never in life been a wash-my-hair-every-day kind of girl. The only time I’ve washed my hair two days in a row is after exceptionally sweaty gardening excursions or after a child threw up in it or used my hair as a napkin or -worse- a hanky.
Oh, come on… you KNOW it’s bound to happen with five kids, right?
Here’s my point. It’s worth a try if you’re frustrated with how your hair is treating you or horrified by the amount of money you have to spend to make your hair do what you want it to do. Let me break down the specifics on how I conditioner only wash my hair.
How to Conditioner-Only Wash Hair:
- Wet your hair thoroughly in the shower, massaging your scalp.
- Squirt a palmful of silicone-free conditioner into your hand and massage it into your scalp and the hair near it.
- Squirt another palmful of silicone-free conditioner into your hand and massage it into the rest of your hair. Repeat this until all of your hair is saturated with the conditioner. If your hair is thick and lower-mid back length like mine, you’ll need about 4 palms-ful to coat your hair and scalp.
- Pile your hair on your head to keep it out of the shower stream. If you have one, put a cheap-o shower cap on to keep the conditioner from rinsing away.
- Complete whatever else you need to in the shower; wash your bod, shave, whatever.
- Add a splash of water to your hair and scrub your scalp again, then rinse your hair fully.
- Dry/Style/Whatever your hair as usual. For me, most often this means blow-drying my bangs so they don’t lay funny and letting the rest of my hair do whatever it wants. This is what works best for me!
- Do this two to three times a week. Unless you’re working out HARD daily or having someone wipe boogers in your hair, this should be sufficient.

Use this for Conditioner Only Washing (No Shampoo):
- Suave Naturals Coconut Conditioner (This 6 pack is a “Subscribe and Save” option on Amazon, meaning they automatically ship to you every month, two months, three months, or however often you specify!)
I’m feeling a little sheepish about even bringing this up here, so help a gal out. What do you think? Am I nuts? Would you ever try it? Do you want to sniff my hair to verify I don’t smell like a fryolator before giving it a shot or is this just completely off the table for you? Talk to me!
Update: This post was originally published February 15th, 2013. Because it has been more than two years since publication and because I am still going co-washing strong, I wanted to bring it back to the front for the benefit of those who may not have seen it yet. The number of people for whom this has made a huge difference -as evidenced by the comments below- is pretty awesome.

Thanks! I’m going to try this with my daughter and see if it helps.

Thanks for sharing! Do you use any product after?

Thank you for the post! My head has been getting worse in regards to itchyness and dryness – my face is horrible for breakouts. ugh. Horrible. I use coconut oil on my face, because I don’t like the face creams.
I want to try this, and if it works for me. I may get my daughter to do this (she is 1.5 years old) when she gets to be old enough for “shampoo and conditioner”.
my only skepticism is I wash my hair every day, and it gets super greasy quick!(Which i know 100% is from washing it every day – horrible cycle or ruining my skin).
Do you think men could do this too?
I hope it works, and thank you for posting 4 years ago. I am happy I found it today in 2017.
now.. to figure out what to do for the extremely dry skin on the rest of my body -.-

Men can totally do this, though they may have a longer break-in period because unless they have long hair to soak up the extra oil, they may find that initially their hair will get greasy fast. The key is to stick with it, because eventually your scalp will stop producing so much oil. I have done the co-only wash several times already and I’m back on the wagon. I only stopped for a while after a bad trip to the salon when I wasn’t paying attention and they put silicones in my hair and then I had to kind of start all over again.
Here’s the key that wasn’t explained in the article. When you first start co-washing only, you need to wash your hair one last time with a sulfate shampoo to get all the build up off. Very important: Make sure the shampoo doesn’t have any silicones in it!! I will admit, I was so paranoid about it that I actually washed my hair with body wash. Yuck. But it had sulfates in it and not much else. I followed up with my Suave naturals and then it was co-only. I concur with the author – the Suave Naturals Coconut is my go-to for co-washing. It’s cheap, it smells good and it works fantastic for this.
For a man, the process is the same but they might have to co-wash a little more often in the beginning because of the oil. the other thing that really helped is getting a boar bristle brush to distribute your natural oils through your hair. You want oil! It’s good for your hair! Also, massage your scalp really well in the shower. Don’t scratch, but good massage will help free any dirt or build up.
For me, it took about six weeks for my hair to become less freaky/oily. The results are wonderful though – my hair no longer falls out in giant clumps and it is soooo soft. It has a natural shine and feels a lot less fragile. You just gotta get through that initial period of increased oiliness and you can get away with washing it maybe twice or three times a week. My boyfriend’s experience mirrored my own, though as a naturally oiler person he was an every other day co-washer which was fine. If he persisted I think he could have gotten it down to every third day. It took me years of convincing him that washing his hair twice a day (YES 2x!!) was NOT helping to reduce the oil, it was making it worse! So now, he’s found a happy medium and his hair looks gorgeous!

My name is Angellee. I have been using conditioner only for over 20 years now. My daughter has never used it. We both have thick hair. Hers is shoulder length and mine is a little past my waist. Hers is achieved blonde n mine is purple. I am 46 n my hair is just as beautiful as it was in my teens. I just noticed 1 day that my hair squeaked before washing it. So I just used some conditioner. I haven’t looked back since. Hers is beautiful. We both have hair that tangles easily n very fast. I use the smoothing kind. So if your crazy then so am i.

Here’s to being crazy, Angellee!

I know its 2 years old. I have been washing with conditioner only for 2 years because it makes my hair color last longer, but my hair stays so oily and flat like looking dirty 🙁 but it does make your hair color fall less and it last forever

I stumbled upon this idea recently. Wake up late, no time to shower so you just wet your hair to get it to form how you want. It looked so good I decided to try it again. I asked a friend if using washing hair with conditioner is OK and she didn’t know, and I ended up here! Something about putting product in your hair, massaging it and rinsing makes me feel cleaner. Anyway, I’m 2 days into no shampoo and my hair almost styles itself! The natural oils in my hair act as a gel to keep it in place and surprisingly it doesn’t even look oily (like using some gels). I am so excited that I’m not the only one who thought this was a good idea and I’ll probably never go back to using shampoo.

Hello,
My hair is very thin, fine, oily and very chemically damaged. I washed my hair everyday, sometime twice. I’ve been trying not to wash my hair everyday and the night before I wash my hair I’ve tried coconut oil overnight, avocado oil over night and almond oil. I like almond oil the most for me. I can go 3 days without washing my hair now, this really excites me. I use hairspray everyday day, will just using conditioner clean out the hairspray. I really want to try not using shampoo and use just conditioner, I want beautiful healthy hair. My skin and hair have always been oily with my face breaking out all the time. I had a facial the other day and she said my face is dehydrated, I was shocked because my skin is so oily. She said I am producing extra oil because of the dehydration which is causing breakouts. So now I continue to use my 3 step system from clinique for oily skin plus cliniques moisture surge which doesn’t have oil, I hate all of those products on my face. So my questions are: Will conditioner only clean hairspray out of my hair and how do you clean your face now, I’d like to stop using so many products on my face as well. Great Blog and beautiful family. Thank you for such great information.
Rebecca says
Hi Lynn-
I actually use a Norwex body cloth on my face (no soap at all, none needed!) And I don’t use many hair products, but when I do use them, the conditioner seems to do a great job removing them!
Alisha says
I also just use water on my face – I should get one of those cloths!
I thought I would throw in — my face is less dry and oily when I use coconut oil daily. Just a dab. I use tea tree, lavender and frankincense oil with coconut oil for breakouts.
I find my skin is SO much less oily than it use to be. I haven’t used product on my face for years. Only make-up I wear – which is rarely – is eye stuff (liner, mascara, and shadow) which I use lotion or coconut oil to remove it.
I have definitely found that oil removes oil and sticky stuff better than non-oil products that cause drying – alcohol based washes.
🙂

Thanks so much, Alisha!

I should also point out that I use a Korean skincare routine for the rest of my skincare needs. I use a ton of products but I use very little of them and they’re light. Lots of layering!

Hello, as a male I use very little hair spray (just enough to hold my pompadour), but I have yet to notice my hair looking bad after conditioning it the next morning; if anything, it helps the next time I style! I also have thin hair (not thinning)

Hi Rebecca, I read your blog and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don’t have any cheap conditioner at this time, plan on buying some tomorrow. So tonight I washed my hair and borrowed some conditioner from my daughter-in-law and wash my hair tonight for the first time without shampoo and did as you indicated. I guess time will tell and I am excited to see what happens.

I have super short hair, pixie cut short hair. I’ve had it short for years, since my oldest son (who happens to be 16 now) was about two years old. I have been using only conditioner to ‘wash’ my hair for quite some time now. I co-wash daily…I like my hair to smell nice and if I don’t co-wash it, it just feels ‘grimy’.
I’m an active mom of four (3 boys and one girl), I do housework, yardwork, work a job outside the home and I have chickens as pets so I and am outside in the muck daily, so I shower daily.
I swear by co-washing, and I concur that the cheapest conditioners work the best! Suave, VO5, the less than $5/bottle stuff works the best!
Thank you for the great article and for reassuring me that I’m not weird…or at least I’m not the only one!

Question…
I absolutely have to try this method of washing my hair, so I ran to the store to buy the conditioner!
But when I started looking for the conditioner you mentioned, I found that there were two different kinds .
Suave natural, and Suave essential tropical coconut . Which is the correct one? I called the company to ask if their product was silicone free, the guy in the phone couldn’t tell me mom where are the other ! So, do I buy the Suave Natural or the Suave Essentials.
Thanks!

Wow, what a great article . I will definitely try this . I’m going through A very ugly/dry hair period due to some medication I’m taking. At at least I think that’s what’s doing it !
Anyway I’ve tried 1 million different shampoos and nothing is working . Plus I’m breaking out as well!
Hopefully this will help me as much as it helped you!
Thanks for writing this article. Your hair looks great!!!

Hi Marisa- Whether I can credit the conditioner only washing or not, I don’t know, but my hair has thickened back up since I stopped using shampoo.

This might be a great solution for those of us who bleach their hair. I cringe putting shampoo on it because it’s already somewhat damaged. I’m definitely going to try it!

Awesome, Gail! I hope it works well for you!

So I seen you say in a reply to someone about what you use for your hair “” I used Suave Naturals Coconut Conditioner.””
In this statement though you make it sound like it’s past tinted as if seems using this you have changed to a new ether conditioner or system
Could I ask what it is that your now using today if it is not the Suave Naturals Coconut Conditioner???
Rebecca says
Hi there! I think you’re reading into this one a little too much 🙂 I still use Suave Coconut Conditioner (I think they call it something other than Naturals now, but it’s the same product.)
SavVas says
Oooh ok well maybe but I showed it to my husband and he reads it the same lol but yea I’m getting a bottle today so I will definitely be working on this one and thank you for the great idea ,I also used wen and from there I started getting Hair One from Sally’s which does work great but still can be rather expensive even if it is half the cost of win
But definitely trying to better the budget even more is important these days ?

I’ve been curious about doing this for about 2 years. I have naturally oily hair, and it’s almost waist length, so I was afraid this wouldn’t work at all for me. But now that I know you don’t have to buy a $32 bottle of special cleansing conditioners, I’m certainly going to try it. I’ve read that Wen stuff is making people’s hair fall out, so I wondered if this conditioning only thing is blocking the pores on people’s heads, or if it’s something in that product. That also has prevented me from doing this, yet. I have genetic hair loss problems on both sides of the family that apparently doesn’t care if you’re a male or female. So I have that to deal with, as well.

Hi! I came across your post about a month ago and I have tried using garnier whole blends legendary olive conditioner. It has been working wonderfully!! I have been trying to get my mom and sister on board too but they’re not so sure about it yet. I’m wondering if anyone has noticed more breakouts on their face since trying this? I have also started taking skin nails and hair vitamins so it maybe those. Anyway just curious. I love your blog! Thank you for the information!!?

Hi there! Just wanted to let you and anyone reading this know that I tried this last night and HOLY MOLY my hair is AMAZING! I’ve used fancy expensive shampoos and conditioners, Wen, you name it. I found this article yesterday on my search for how to improve my hair. I’m 34 and have always had pretty good hair. Just recently I’ve noticed that it’s not as good anymore (I assume hormone changes) and I’ve done less shampooing/conditioning and styling but it still seems to be worse off. I thought “maybe MY hair is actually better off when I do wash it every day?” so I did some googling, found this article, went to the store after the gym and grabbed some Suave Naturals conditioner (green bottle). Got in the shower and massaged my scalp first then moved to the middle then the ends (I have long hair), rolled it in a bun and clipped it aside while I washed up. I was worried that I wouldn’t get that clean feeling or I’d feel residue or have a hard time blow drying it because that’s happened in the past with products like Wen but NOPE! My hair is AMAZING after one use! I cannot wait to see how much my hair improves over time using this method oh and not to mention how inexpensive Suave is. THANK YOU!
Erika C. says
CORRECTION: Suave naturals is not the green bottle. Sorry!
Rebecca says
Yeah, baby! Isn’t it amazing how your hair responds to this???

Wow! I, too, took to the interwebs to find a solution for my frizzy, itchy mess of a head. I am absolutely going to give this a shot and, if it works, have my girls start doing it as well. I have two daughters (12 and 7). Both have itchy scalp and my youngest has naturally curly hair. My fingers are crossed with this one!
